SEPTEMBER 15 and 16, 2018
PORTO ALEGRE • SÃO PAULO
A spectacle of guitars from the most varied trends and influences is what was presented to the public at the 2018 edition of Samsung Best of Blues, in Porto Alegre and São Paulo.
The highlight of the shows was American guitarist Tom Morello, who took to the festival stage for the first time, showing why he was included in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
Meanwhile, American John Lowery, known as "John 5" after joining Marilyn Manson's band in 1998, performed in his usual guise and got the audience excited with his versatile style and virtuoso technique.
The Brazilian band Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística formed by Ana Morena (bass), Anderson Foca (guitar), Yves Fernandes (drums) and Alexandre Capilé (guitar) brought their instrumental dance rock, combining elements of surf music, Brazilian rhythms and Ska.
Completing the line-up is Isa Nielsen, a Brazilian-Danish guitarist who started playing at the age of 14 and soon formed her first band. She has participated in reality shows such as Rocka Rolla and Dia Mundial do Rock, both on MTV, with the band Detonator and Musas do Metal, with whom she performed in 2012 at VMB – MTV.

TOM MORELLO
Fans familiar with American musician Tom Morello's career were not surprised when he led protests during Samsung Best of Blues 2018.
At the shows in Porto Alegre and São Paulo, Morello showed the audience a poster stuck to the back of his guitar, with the slogan “Justice for Marielle” – a reference to the murder of Rio de Janeiro councilwoman Marielle Franco, six months before the shows.
Born in New York in 1964 and raised in Libertyville (Illinois), as a teenager he was already dividing his interests between music and politics – so much so that he graduated in Social Studies from Harvard University.
On the other hand, his talent led him to be voted the fifth best guitarist during the 1980s, 90s and 2000s, in a poll organized by the British broadcaster BBC.
Since the beginning of his career, Morello has made it clear, in songs and attitudes, that he does not see music as an object of entertainment – he uses it, above all, as a political instrument.

JOHN 5
As a child, he loved horror movies with monsters, ghosts and scary undead. As a teenager, already converted to rock and playing guitar, his favorite band was Kiss. It was only natural, therefore, to see him enter the stage of Samsung Best of Blues 2018 made up as a ghost.
Fate has always conspired in favor of John William Lowery, who was born in Gross Point (Michigan) in 1970. In 1998, upon returning from a European tour with the band 2wo, he received an invitation to have lunch with Marilyn Manson, who was looking for a guitarist for his Rock Is Dead tour.
In addition to hiring him, Manson renamed him John 5 – the persona he decided to keep when he left the band in 2003 to pursue a solo career.
Bizarreness aside, John is a creative guitarist who is capable of playing a variety of genres. So much so that his history of collaborations includes artists of varied styles, such as KD Lang, David Lee Roth, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Tina Guo and Rob Zombie.

ISA NIELSEN
Isabela Nielsen was born in Denmark in 1991 and was only two years old when she moved with her family to São Paulo. She already liked rock and metal at the age of 14, when she started playing the guitar.
Early influences include guitarists Steve Vai and Lita Ford, as well as the bands Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Vixen and Megadeth.
After playing with the bands Metalmania, Volkana and Musas do Metal, she formed the Distorted Duo with guitarist and producer Tiago de Moura, an original project based on songs, which allowed her to improve as a vocalist.
The fact that more women are gaining prominence in the rock scene is cause for celebration. “I’m seeing more girls playing music, which is really good”, she said. “I hope more and more women take up space in music, as well as in other areas of society.”
Two years after her acclaimed performance at the 2018 edition of Samsung Best of Blues, guitarist Isa Nielsen began a new phase in her career.

CAMARONES
ORQUESTRA
GUITARRÍSTICA
The band from Natal (RN) formed by Anderson Foca (guitar), Ana Morena (bass), Alexandre Capilé (guitar) and Yves Fernandes (drums), brought their instrumental project with a repertoire of cartoon and film themes to the Samsung Best of Blues stage in 2018.
With eight albums released in a 12-year career, Camarones Orquestra Guitarrística has already toured the country, in addition to taking its danceable rock with a punk influence to other festivals in Brazil and abroad.
It was enough to watch a part of the show to notice the pleasure that the musicians transmit: “We are driven by the joy of making music and being on the road”, confirms Anderson Foca.

GENERAL
BONIMORES
The career of this young band from Rio Grande do Sul gained momentum in 2014, when they won the Samsung eFestival competition, chosen by popular vote.
Formed in 2010, in Passo Fundo (RS), General BoniMores (in Latin, “boni mores” means good manners) began mixing their own songs with versions of hits from groups and artists that influenced them, such as the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Raul Seixas, Legião Urbana and Mutantes.
The band opened the stage at Samsung Best of Blues 2018, in Porto Alegre.
